Dr. Handkins retired from the North American Mission Board (NAMB) the Illinois Baptist State Association (IBSA) in 2005. He and his wife Donna moved to Apex, North Carolina. They have remained very active in ministry. He served as interim music minister at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church, Apex, NC (2006-7) where he started and taught a Sunday School class for adults .
From August 2007 to Feburary 2008 He served as the Adult Bible Study Leader on Wednesday night at Good Hope Baptist Church in Morrisville, NC while the church was withour a pastor. He is currently serving as interim pastor of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC.

Ten years as Director of Missions as an appointed Missionary of the Home Mission Board and North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Taught High School (Chemistry and Physics) for three years as a bivocational pastor.

1967 to 1969. Pastor of the Goshen Baptist Church near Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
1964 to 1967. Pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church near Anna, Illinois.
